Mountain History Day. We hope to see you at Mountain History Day on Saturday, September 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mason-Taylor Ranch, 22951 Summit Road. This annual family event will include a lunch of vegetarian lasagna or barbecued tri- tip or chicken, live music by local musicians Patti Maxine and The Wildcat Mountain Ramblers, old-fashioned children’s games, a history trail, and a presentation about the of the railroad tunnels by historian Brian Liddicoat.

Bid to win an item at the silent auction of local merchant donations, and enjoy wine and beer poured by local wineries and breweries for a small donation. You can also purchase Loma Prieta Museum clothing and local history books.

The Mason-Taylor Ranch property was homesteaded by the Schultheis family in 1851. The abundant history of the property includes Native American sacred sites, the log cabin where Mountain Charlie recovered after a grizzly bear attack, early farm buildings, wagon roads to the Laurel train station, a Georgian Victorian house, and the site of the Summit Opera House.

You may have hiked or ridden a mountain bike in the beautiful Soquel Demonstration State Forest. Learn about the interesting history of this forest from former forest manager Thomas Sutfin on Thursday, October 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Loma Prieta Elementary School Forum. This Loma Prieta Museum history event is free.

Local History in the New Community Center. We are working with volunteer specialists to plan wall displays of local for the new community center next to Building Blocks Preschool. These displays will be interesting and educational for students and the community.

A Howling Wilderness. A new printing of a local history book about the Summit area by Dr. Stephen Payne is now available for a donation of $25.
