South Skyline Firesafe Council and South Skyline Emergency Preparedness Organization will sponsor a workshop on preparing your family, home, and neighborhood for an emergency, from wildfires and earthquakes to accidents and injuries. The workshop will be on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Saratoga Summit Cal Fire station, 12900 Skyline Boulevard.

Experts will present practical skills and actions you can take, including lots of new content. Topics will include new requirements for home hardening and defensible space, managing the biomass in your defensible space, a home-insurance update, simple but effective first-aid techniques, and what to do when you are first on the scene of an accident.

We’ll also explain how to form a Firewise , communicate with neighbors in an emergency, and coordinate with neighbors in emergency-preparation efforts. You’ll have an opportunity to meet first responders from South Skyline Fire and Rescue and the La Honda Fire Brigade, and visit information booths staffed by partners and vendors.

It’s like a giant garage sale, but everything is free. Bring along clean, usable items in good working condition—anything from a single item to a truckload—to share with neighbors. If you don’t have anything to contribute, a $5 donation lets you take what you need for personal use.

Collecting items for resale is not allowed from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Kindly skip anything that’s better suited for the landfill. If it’s not something you’d give a friend, it probably doesn’t belong at the swap. You don’t need to stay with your items, but please return at noon to pick up anything that wasn’t claimed.

The Las Cumbres Holiday Bazaar benefits South Skyline Firefighters (Company 29) and the South Skyline Fire Safe Council, two volunteer-based organizations dedicated to wildfire safety. Cups of Yoga Thinking About Death Jaime Domond Premise, in partnership with Cups of Yoga, offers an enriching evening of thoughtful dialogue and community connection. We will explore two selected writings at this in- person session on Thursday, September 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Cups of Yoga, 24900 Highland Way.

The first is The Death of Ivan Illyich, a narrative about existential crisis by Leo Tolstoy. This 30-page text invites deep reflection on life’s value as Ivan Ilyich confronts his own mortality. The second is a brief but powerful three- page essay by Virginia Woolf, The Death of the Moth, that uses the image of a moth’s final struggle to explore life’s fragility and the inevitability of death.

Light refreshments will be provided as we engage in open, inclusive conversation in a warm and welcoming setting. The cost for this session is $35 per person.
