Friends of Bear Creek Stables

In late February, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District approved an agreement with Friends of Bear Creek Stables (FBCS), to transform the historic stables into a public educational center for equine- and nature-based programs. This agreement comes after a two-year process of gathering community input, investing countless volunteer hours, and a substantial fundraising campaign that raised $250,000 through donations and grants to begin operations. FBCS will steward the facility.

Located in the heart of Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, the stables date back to the Dr. Harry L. Tevis estate. Tevis originally built the stables in 1916 to house his Tennessee Walking Horses. “Horses will continue to be the focal point for programs, along with other nature-based programs. Both welcome the public into the natural environment to experience the preserve’s beautiful setting, where outdoor learning and exploring happen naturally,”

said Rick Parfitt, president of FBCS. FBCS will begin offering programs for all ages this spring. Their programs will incorporate five facets: joy of learning, wonder of nature, healing power of horses, whispers of history, and value of community.
