Alma Equine

Alma Equine and ArtHouse Studio offer multi-faceted summer camps that include creativity projects, nature hikes, and experiences with horses. In June, we will offer a tuition-free camp for underserved children thanks to a new non-profit partnership. We will also offer two weeks of summer camps for paying participants from July 20 through August 3.

Our camps are designed to create a nurturing and healing environment for students ages 10 to 14. Camps are limited to 12 students per week and are hosted on a private property near the Oakmont neighborhood overlooking Lexington Reservoir.

Alma Equine recently conducted a one-day sneak peek to share the new camp concept. Environmental-education specialist and nature guide C.B. Edmonds led a group hike with Jess the mustang and gave campers the opportunity to examine animal tracks and learn about native plants while exploring the natural beauty of a local hilltop trail. They enjoyed a few moments of silence and found inspiration and materials for an ephemeral art project. They discovered that with a little imagination, a simple pile of leaves and twigs can magically transform into a beautiful underwater scene or a simulated campfire. Students then selected a few natural objects to bring back to camp for closer examination under the dissecting microscopes.

After returning from the hike and some rest in the tranquil surroundings of Alma Equine’s barn, the children worked in small groups with Jess to hone their horsemanship skills. They used a microscope to study leaves, lichens, galls, and other natural materials they had collected on their hike. The afternoon ended with a snack and a fun-filled sing-along that even Jess seemed to enjoy.
