Future of Bear Creek Stables

This is an update on the future of Bear Creek Stables, located in the Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Last summer, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District board of directors organized an ad hoc committee consisting of three of the seven directors and a broad working group of volunteers. The working groups focused on operations and programing, site design, architecture and engineering, and funding and partnerships.

After several months of work and many hours of collaboration, the ad hoc working groups presented an in-depth report to the MidPen staff and board of directors at a public meeting in November. The large meeting room was overflowing with supporters.

The outcome required negotiations between staff and the non-profit slated to take over the stables. MidPen staff will make a final decision at a public meeting in late March. The stables will offer school tours, equine and environmental tours, education, hands- on experiences with horses, and small farm animals for children to visit. The stables will be a welcome gathering place for the with a focus not only on horses, but also on the history and environment of the Bear Creek Redwoods preserve.
