A C T I V E Lago Lomita Vineyards Amendments Robin Porter The quality of the soil on our property is integral to the health of our grape vines. Amendments can improve the physical structure of the soil. By adding things like gypsum, compost, and peat moss, we increase aeration and drainage. This works in both clay and sandy soils. Amendments can help balance the chemistry of the soil by adjusting pH or sodium content. Microbes and organic matter help improve the biological health of the soil. We do soil testing by collecting deep soil samples from various parts of the vineyard. We bag the samples and send them to a local laboratory. When the results come back, the lab makes recommendations. We also consult trusted vineyard consultants, like our local Prudy Foxx, who also advise us on what is needed. In our case, we needed calcium, so we brought in 25 tons of ground oyster shells. Lucky for us, we live near the ocean! We’re happy we didn’t have to gather and grind up all those oyster shells ourselves. Next time you’re at an oyster bar, consider how their shells can positively impact the taste of your glass of wine. Soil structure is greatly enhanced by compost. Last year, we got a grant to spread 50 tons of compost. As you can see in the photo, our dog Koda did most of the work. Increasing organic matter helps the long- term fertility of our vines and helps with drought resistance. We also spray seaweed, a great source of potassium, on the leaves. We’ve found that if you take care of the soil, the soil will take care of the vines.
