Lago Lomita Vineyards Resilience Robin Porter After the rains, we're outside again for a few sunny days. Having a vineyard comes with some challenges. You need all the infrastructure of a small town to survive. Mountain residents complain to the county about the lack of local road maintenance around the mountains. I’m often happy to hear a neighbor talking about how the county “finally got some work done on Highland” or another mountain road. That’s great for us as well—up to our gate. Beyond our entrance gate, we have nearly a mile of private roads we travel every day. We have all the same needs most people depend on the county to fix—mostly brush, potholes, and clogged culverts. This work is critical since it sometimes snows up at our elevation. Mark heads our road department. We often drive 22-foot flatbed trucks with farm bins or equipment up and down our roads. Keeping the road maintained is a requirement. We also run our own parks department. We spread tons of compost over areas of our property in need of soil enrichment, mow all the undergrowth, and keep the weeds knocked down. The local fire department comes by regularly to inspect the fire hydrant on our water system. I’m told our water supply was used to fill multiple water tenders during the Lexington Fire in 1985. During most power outages, we’re often the “end of the line” as far as PG&E is concerned, so we depend on generators and propane for the Lago Lomita energy company. While we’re lucky to have the Summit Store close by, we’ve also created a food cache by home-canning each summer’s garden bounty. That helps tide us over in case the road is blocked by fallen trees, or if the weather is so terrible that no one wants to go out. Having our own departments of roads, parks, water, energy, and food is critical to getting through nearly anything. Resilience is important.
